Perceptual Ephialtes

The name “Perceptual Ephialtes” comes from a combination of “perceptual blindness” and “ephialtes”. “Perceptual blindness” -referring to the phenomenon where an individual fails to perceive an unexpected stimulus in plain sight. “Ephialtes” -referring to the anxiety disorder where an individual has nightmares, or simply another word for a nightmare.

I tried to portray an exaggerated version of myself or someone who doesn’t pay attention to their surroundings. In the video I’m staring straight into the camera followed by quick flashes of the nature and the human creations around me showing what I’m missing out on. As the video goes on, I start noticing the details around me. I realize how dream like everything feels and get overwhelmed by it all, thus literally running away from it. But you can’t escape reality, at least usually.

The initial inspiration came from the music videos: Katarsis – Būsi  and Katarsis – Kas man be jūros. I love the simple shots showing the lead singer standing in different environments. I also loved the color grading and other visual effects. I was also inspired by the feeling of my own dreams and memories.

Making the video made me realize how a song can change the direction of editing quickly. I originally wanted to find a song that I would base the video on, but that was only followed by procrastination. After we had shot everything, I finally decided on the track Routine by Oleksii_Kalyna because of its tempo and uncertainly and melancholy vibe.

Everything from planning to editing was made in just three days with a team of three people: Milka Halonen, Henriina Nevalainen and Olivia Nyholm.

Here is a fun plan for the first location we shot at.
